What a re-clad involves

Cladding is the outer skin of a framed wall: weatherboards, feature boards or panels fixed over a wrap that keeps out water and wind. A re-clad takes the old cladding off back to the frame, fixes anything soft, wraps the wall, and puts new boards on, often with new windows at the same time.

Cladding is part of the building and carpentry I do across Newcastle. On one second-storey re-clad I stripped off the old boards and awning, fitted new windows, re-clad the walls and finished the architraves. I’ve also clad two-storey homes in weatherboards and feature panels.

Recent cladding jobs

What cladding do you install?

  • Weatherboards

Horizontal boards that overlap, the classic Newcastle look, in timber or fibre cement.

  • Feature cladding

Vertical boards or panels on part of a wall to break up a two-storey front.

  • Re-clads

Old, cracked or rotting cladding off, the frame checked and repaired, new cladding on.

  • Cladding with new windows

New windows fitted and flashed during a re-clad, so the trims are done once.

What does a re-clad look like step by step?

Are there rules for cladding in bushfire areas?

A lot of land around Lake Macquarie and the Hunter is mapped as bush fire prone. On that land, building work follows the NSW Rural Fire Service rules for building in a bush fire area:

  • Your council’s bush fire prone land map shows whether your block is on it.
  • A block on the map has a Bushfire Attack Level, or BAL, from low to flame zone.
  • Cladding and windows have to meet Australian Standard AS 3959 for that BAL, which can rule out some timber boards.

Before I quote a re-clad, we check your block on the City of Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, Maitland or Cessnock council map, so the cladding you pick suits it.

What changes the price of cladding?

Every cladding job is priced on site. These change the cost the most:

Wall area
The square metres to clad, and how many windows and corners break it up.
Board
Timber, fibre cement and feature panels all cost different amounts.
Height
Second-storey walls need scaffolding.
What is underneath
Soft or rotten frame found behind old cladding gets repaired first.
Windows
New windows fitted during the re-clad.

The quote is free, and you get the price before any work starts. Residential building work over $5,000 also needs a licensed contractor and a written contract under NSW law, as NSW Fair Trading sets out. Every job over that amount comes with one.

Questions about cladding

Old cladding and awning before a re-clad
Can you re-clad just one wall?

Yes. One wall, one storey or the whole house. Matching new boards to old is easiest when a full wall is done.

Can you fit new windows while re-cladding?

Yes, and it is the best time. The windows go in and get flashed before the new boards, like my second-storey re-clad.

Timber or fibre cement weatherboards?

Timber has a natural look and needs painting every so often. Fibre cement is lower upkeep and suits bush fire prone blocks. I go through both on site.

What if the frame behind is rotten?

I repair or replace soft framing before the new cladding goes on, and tell you before doing it.

Is the quote free?

Yes. I come out, measure up and give you a price before any work starts. Call 0402 499 810.

Where do you do cladding?

I’m based at 4 Nightingale Crescent, Cameron Park NSW 2285 and build across Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, Cessnock and Maitland. There’s no showroom: I come to you to look at the job.
