What finishing carpentry is

Finishing carpentry is the timber you see once the walls are up: skirting boards along the floor, architraves around doors and windows, the doors themselves and the trims that cover joins. It is called finishing because it comes last, and it is the part of a room people notice when it is done badly.

It is the last step of a lot of the carpentry jobs I do for homeowners around Newcastle. On a second-storey re-clad I finished the new windows with architraves, and on renovations I fit the doors, architraves and skirting through the house.

Recent jobs with finishing work

What finishing carpentry do you do?

  • Skirting boards

Fitted to the floor with tight corners, scribed where the floor is out of level.

  • Architraves

Around every door and window, mitred at the corners so the joins close up.

  • Doors

Internal and front doors hung to an even gap, with handles and locks fitted.

  • Window trims

Architraves and sills inside, and trims outside after new windows go in.

  • Renovation fit-outs

The full finishing round after a renovation: doors, skirting, architraves and trims in one go.

What makes finishing carpentry look right?

Good finishing work is mostly in the details you only notice when they are wrong.

Finished second storey with new windows and trims

Tight joins

Mitred corners on architraves and skirting that close up with no gap, so a painter has nothing to fill.

Weatherboard home with new windows

Even reveals

The small step between a door or window frame and its architrave, kept the same all the way round.

Wall stripped back with new windows going in

Following the house

Older houses are rarely square. Skirting is scribed to the floor and architraves set to the frame, so the trim hides the gaps instead of showing them.

What changes the price of finishing carpentry?

Every job is priced on site. These change the cost the most:

Metres of trim
How many rooms of skirting and how many doors and windows to trim.
Profile
Plain, bevelled or shaped skirting and architraves, in pine or MDF.
Doors
How many doors to hang, and whether frames need fixing first.
The house
Older homes with uneven floors take more scribing and fitting.
Removal
Taking off old skirting and architraves before the new ones go on.

The quote is free, and you get the price before any work starts. Residential building work over $5,000 also needs a licensed contractor and a written contract under NSW law, as NSW Fair Trading sets out. Every job over that amount comes with one.

Questions about finishing carpentry

Finished second storey with new windows and trims
What is the difference between skirting and architraves?

Skirting runs along the bottom of the wall where it meets the floor. Architraves frame doors and windows. They are usually picked to match.

Can you match my existing skirting?

Usually. Common profiles are still made. For an older house I look for the closest match and show you before fitting.

Do you paint the skirting and architraves?

I fit them ready for paint. A painter finishes them, and I can recommend one.

Do you do just one room?

Yes. One room or a whole house of doors, skirting and architraves.

Is the quote free?

Yes. I come out, measure up and give you a price before any work starts. Call 0402 499 810.

Where do you do finishing carpentry?

I’m based at 4 Nightingale Crescent, Cameron Park NSW 2285 and build across Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, Cessnock and Maitland. There’s no showroom: I come to you to look at the job.
