What goes into hanging a door

Hanging a door means fitting it to its frame so it swings freely, closes with an even gap all round and latches first time. The hinges are set into the door and the jamb, the lock is fitted, and the architraves finish the frame against the wall. A door that sticks or will not latch is usually a frame that has moved.

Doors are part of the licensed carpentry work I take on across Newcastle. On a bathroom renovation I framed and fitted a cavity slider, a door that slides into the wall, and on renovations I hang doors and fit the architraves around them.

Recent carpentry jobs

What doors do you install?

  • Front doors

A new front door hung in a new or existing frame, with the lock and the trims outside.

  • Internal doors

Hollow-core and solid internal doors hung to an even gap, with handles and architraves.

  • Cavity sliders

A door that slides into a pocket in the wall, which saves the space a swinging door needs. Best fitted while the wall is open.

  • New door frames

Framing a new doorway or moving one, then fitting the jambs and the door.

  • Sticking and dropped doors

Re-hanging a door that drags, sticks or will not latch.

Which door suits which spot?

The right door depends on where it goes and how much room there is to swing it.

Front entry

A solid front door with a glass panel lets light into the hall. It needs a sound frame and a weather seal at the sill.

Tight spaces

In a small bathroom or laundry, a cavity slider frees up the wall a door would swing over. The pocket is framed in while the wall is open.

Through a renovation

On a renovation, doors are hung after the walls are sheeted, then architraves and skirting go on together.

What changes the price of door installation?

Every door job is priced on site. These change the cost the most:

The door
Hollow-core, solid timber and glass-panel doors all cost different amounts.
Existing frame or new
Hanging a door in a sound frame is quicker than framing a new doorway.
Cavity sliders
Need the wall opened and a pocket framed in.
Hardware
Locks, handles and hinges you pick.
Trims
New architraves around the frame, and painting if you want it done.

The quote is free, and you get the price before any work starts. Residential building work over $5,000 also needs a licensed contractor and a written contract under NSW law, as NSW Fair Trading sets out. Every job over that amount comes with one.

Questions about door installation

Timber front door with a glass panel on a renovated entry
Can you hang a door I’ve already bought?

Yes. I check it fits the frame first. If it does not, it can often be trimmed to size.

Why does my door stick?

Usually the frame or the house has moved, or the hinges have worked loose. Re-hanging or planing the door fixes most of them.

Can you fit a cavity slider in an existing wall?

Yes, but the wall has to be opened to fit the pocket. It is simplest during a renovation, when the wall is open anyway.

Do you fit the architraves too?

Yes. I fit the architraves and skirting around new doors so the room looks finished.

Do you do whole houses of doors?

Yes. On renovations I hang every door in the house along with the architraves and skirting.

Where do you install doors?

I’m based at 4 Nightingale Crescent, Cameron Park NSW 2285 and build across Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, Cessnock and Maitland. There’s no showroom: I come to you to look at the job.
